Happy New Year

I decided just before the first of the year that I was going to devote a lot more time to blogging this year. Then Darcie got sick and landed in the hospital for a couple weeks and that plan went straight down the shitter. Darcie has been home for almost 2 weeks now and she's doing incredible. So much so that I've even started knitting again. Last night was my first time back to knit night at the LYS in almost a month and it felt so good to get back to what passes for normal in these parts.

I knit myself these awesome Arc Mittens from the 2011 Interweave Knits Accessories magazine.

Complete and total love. The pattern calls for a single strand of Bulky Lamb's Pride but I chose to use 2 strands of worsted instead. So. Warm. I want a pair in every color of the rainbow now. Of course the next mittens on my list are Cloisonee by the Harlot. So many color combinations dancing through my head. What's the next project in your queue?

Road Trip

Ok, maybe it wasn't an honest-to-goodness road trip, but we did throw the girls in the van a couple weeks ago to go get some new summer clothes and groceries in Plattsburgh. We pulled in shortly after noon and stopped at the traffice light on the main drag. Dailaesse started bouncing around in the back of the van, excitedly screaming for us to look at the cute little doggy in the car next to us. Bran was driving and I was knitting. The car was on Bran's side. He turned and looked and his face got beet red. He told Dailaesse it wasn't a dog and asked her to please look forward. I had no idea what was going on so like an idiot, I looked over too. Bran was right, it wasn't a cute little doggy in the car next to us. It was a young guy in a sporty yellow car with a blond laying in his lap. Dear Lord.

The light FINALLY turned green and we continued on down the road to Sam's Club. We pulled in and the girls hopped out of the van. This is what was in the car a couple spots over from us...

It was an interesting day.

This year Dailaesse asked to go back to school. After the horrid experience we had at our Catholic school the only other option was public school. We got her all registered and I asked the principal if I could volunteer on the playground or something so I could be there to check in with her every day. That ended up landing me a paid position on the playground ground every day with the Kindergarten and 5th grade classes. Let me give you an example of how entertaining this has been...

Just before Easter break I was walking the Kindergarten class down to lunch. They were all excited about their upcoming vacations.

Kid 1: I'm going to Disney!

Me: How exciting! That's awesome!

Kid 1: Yeah. But I have to go on a plane. I've never been on one. I'm a little nervous.

Me: There's nothing to it. It's just like sitting in your living room chair.

Kid 2: I'm going to Washington D.C. for vacation.

Me: That will be lots of fun!

Kid 2: Yeah.

Me: Will you drive or fly?

Kid 2: Fly. We never drive.

Me: You should talk to Kid 1 and tell him what it's like so he won't be so nervous. Have you been to Washington before?

Kid 2: Yeah. We go lots.

Me: Do you have family there?

Kid 2: No. My grandpa and grandma live there.

I was reminded yesterday that I used to blog. So here I am blowing off the dust and starting up yet again.

Can I wish you all a happy, healthy, prosperous New Year? My feeling is that since it's still January and I've not blogged yet this year it's still legal.

I'm still knitting even though I've not been blogging. I have lots of pictures to post of past projects and I'm getting ready to begin a knit a long with the girls at Adirondack Yarns for the Great American Aran Afghan. Very psyched to be getting a little push on this one. I've been wanting to knit it for years and haven't. Accountability is a great motivator for me. Want to join in the fun?

I started working at school for an hour and a half each day back in September. I leaned over to cut meatloaf for a Kindergarten student last week and she told me I should cover my armpit. I was thankful I had shaved.

I have discovered Kindle for Droid. I'm exhausted from staying up all night reading. I've really missed it. So far I've read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and I just downloaded The Girl who Played with Fire last night. If you've not jumped on the bandwagon for this series I highly suggest you do.

Dan's girlfriend couldn't wait to see it, Darcie didn't want to see it but went because she likes Dan's girlfriend, and I was just excited to get out of the house. Verdict? We all loved it and are really hoping there will be a SATC3. If you get the chance...go see it!

I scored the March and May sock yarn kits from The Loopy Ewe on Ravelry and I'm so glad I did. I already filed the patterns and took care of the goodies so I didn't get to photo them but they are great!

The Sock Lite kit was the consolation package for those of us who wanted to join the sock club but weren't chosen. While I'm still a little sad for not making it in, I am thrilled to have gotten the chance at this kit. It is amazing! String Theory Caper. Yum!

This first sock was done weeks ago and the other is half way there. I really love this pattern and yarn! The yarn is Online Holiday Color 1002. I'm not sure if it's something that's still available or not. A quick search didn't turn up any stores that had it. Sue did have it at the store about 3 years ago. Back over the winter a sweet little old lady came in to Sue's looking for some bed socks. She wanted them to be wool and was hoping she would find some already made at the store. When she didn't find them she wondered if we might know someone who would knit her some. I went searching through Ravelry and came up with something somewhat close to what she described and started knitting. She loved them! If you're interested, you can find the details here.

Snug Like A Shrug

Dailaesse was bored one night and started looking through patterns. She saw this one and asked if I could knit it for her. She picked out a skein of Stonehedge Fiber Mill Shepherd's Wool (if you've never knit with this you should really try it, great yarn at a great price!) at Adirondack Yarns and we were off to the races.

I decided if I was going to put my time and effort in to a hand knit that I was going to make it worth my while. So I lengthened the sleeves as well as the lace portion of the bottom. And it still only took one skein. I know she doesn't looked completely thrilled with it (this picture was taken just before heading out to church one evening when she would have rather stayed home to play) but trust me, she is. She really loves it since she chose the pattern and the yarn. It's gotten lots of wear which makes me quite happy too.

Topping Supreme

This is the beginning of my Cable-Eight Top. I'm working it in Universal Supreme Cotton. I love this pattern! It's so easy to memorize and there isn't even any shaping to deal with although I think I will alter the neck some as I don't like anything tight against my neck. I will probably just make a slight v. We'll see when I get there. This is the back so I still have time to think. Not as much time as it looks though because that little bit of progress up there was what I accomplished Saturday evening just before bed. I knocked out a couple more repeats yesterday so it has more than doubled. July 1st shouldn't be any problem at all.

I love the feel of the yarn. It's so soft and really doesn't feel much like cotton at all. Do you feel the but coming? BUT, I've found so far (and since you hold 2 strands together throughout I can't say for sure if it's just one skein or both) 8 spots where just several plies of the yarn have been knotted together as well as 1 full-fledged knot. I can't even begin to tell you how much that annoys me. I'm hoping it's just one skein and the rest will be better to work with.

Webs is having an anniversary sale this month and Cascade 220 is only $4.99 a hank. How can a knitter resist? I ordered enough for 3 sweaters, 2 for me and 1 for Dailaesse. The magenta will become a Yankee Knitter Aran Cardigan for Dailaesse. The Atlantic and the Chocolate Heather? I honestly can't remember now which patterns I had in mind when I ordered but it will be lots of fun looking through patterns again to figure it out. :-)

Back towards the end of the year we had a KAL at the LYS for this great little vest.

I knit this one for the store using Fleece Artist BFL Aran. I am so totally going to knit one for me too. Sue has gotten some new colors that are amazing. Of course it's Fleece Artist so the colors can't be anything but amazing. I'm telling you, this yarn is to dye for! It is so nice to knit with and it blocks like nobodies business. The day I delivered it to the store I replaced my shawl pin with a nice wooden button. I keep meaning to get a picture of it but I always forget to bring my camera. I made a few modifications to the pattern for our KAL just to be a little different. This pattern is SO well written and so easy to follow. In all fairness to Dexter, I should tell you that he didn't completely destroy my Buddy Case. But he did put his stupid teeth on it. Which made me really upset. Upset enough to not be able to look at my Buddy without wanting to find a new home for Dexter. So I bought a new Buddy.

And there on the left side in this picture? Beast. I am showing you this to be fair to my little black bear pup, but I am also showing you this because I just can't throw it away. I finally moved the contents from the old to the new and when I walked to the garbage can I couldn't do it. Honestly, Buddy has a lot of life left to give. Just not to me because it makes me want to take Dexter's. So if you'd like a slightly bitten Buddy of your very own, leave me a comment and tell me why. I'll draw a name at random next Friday, May 14th and send it off to the lucky winner. And to make up for the teeth marks I'll even throw in the skein of Gedifra Fiorista shown below. The Things I Do For Love

I am not a fan of the Steelers. But hubby is. He's lucky I love him because despite how much I absolutely LOVED this yarn (it's the fingering, btw) I HATED knitting every single stitch of these socks. And what's worse is that I agreed to knit another pair for a friend he works with. The yarn for the second pair has been sitting on top of the computer desk snickering at me for weeks. I guess I should cast on for them soon. At least one pair will be leaving the house.

Birthday Loot

So a couple weeks ago I turned 38. The boys got together and decided to surprise me with something they were positive I would love.

I love it all and I was totally surprised! There are 2 skeins of Cascade 220 2413 Red for legwarmers for Dailaesse, Dream In Color Smooshy Malibu Sail which was wound yesterday for some mystery socks I plan to cast on really soon, Dream in Color Smooshy Still Spruce, Sweet Georgia Superwash Sock Fondant, Cascade Heritage 5601 Black for ankle socks for Darcie, Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock Avondale, and last but not least is a gorgeous skein of Spirit Trail Fiberworks Sunna Falcon's Eye which will become a pair of socks for my dad. Now I can't wait for my next birthday!

Smells Like Aliens and Hookers

A few little funnies from the road trip to Boston:

1) Not too long after we get on the Northway there is a spot where Border Patrol normally has a road block. There was much controversy over this in years past as there have been many accidents because it sits just around a bend in the road. In an effort to eliminate this problem, the state laid down several sets of rumble strips and put up big flashing signs indicating there may be traffic stopped ahead. As we drove over the rumble strips Darcie (now remember, this is my 14 year old) asks from the back what exactly the rumble strips are. So I tell her they are to get your attention. She then proceeds to tell me that she thought they were to help get rid of illegal immigrants. I responded by saying that in a roundabout way they are and go on to explain the whole road block/accident issue. And she says??? Oh, I thought they were to shake them off the cars if they were hiding underneath.

2) A very excited Dailaesse needed almost constant entertainment on the way to Boston, aka The Hotel with The Pool. One of the games we played was Spelling Bee. Dailaesse and I had been playing alone for some time. Darcie decided she wanted to participate again and asked me for a word. Before I could give her one, Dailaesse shouted out...PROSTITUTE!

3) As we neared Boston Dailaesse wrinkled her nose and asked what smelled. I told her it was big business. We passed through the stench and a few minutes later Dailaesse was trying to ask us about something she had seen. In trying to explain where she had seen it she told us it was just after the air started smelling like farts.

Yarn Crawl v2010.1

We arrived home at 2am this morning from a wonderful trip to Boston. It was short and quick but there was still room for greatness.

Where to start? I guess the beginning would be good. We loaded up the van Wednesday afternoon for our trip. Our first yarny stop was in Lake Placid at my LYS. I'm working on a (secret, sorry folks, it's killing me not to be able to post about it yet too) project and knew I was going to need another ball of yarn. Sue was just back from Stitches South and was heading out the door so I didn't get to visit but a minute but it was still so nice to see her!

Back in the van I continued on my project. I had grabbed a 24" needle for it because my 40" was already occupied. It was working but after a few rounds my hand was so cramped it was ridiculous. Half way between Lake Placid and Saratoga Springs I had to put the project down because it hurt so bad. Queue the perfect excuse to stop at Common Thread, formerly known as Saratoga Needle Arts. I was really excited to see the new store! We found it with the help of Lola (the navigation in the van) and I barely waited for the van to stop moving before I jumped out and ran up to the store. To my horror, it was closed! I hung my head and got back in the van.

Bran, being the kind hubby he is, suggested that there must be another knit shop in the area. I pulled out the trusty CrackBerry and found the Stitchin' Post just a mile or so away. It was 4:45pm so we called before heading over to see if they were open and if they had the needle I needed. Bingo! Off we went. Not only did I find my needle, I also found these beauties:

On Thursday, I finally got to meet Leslie! Leslie drove all the way to our hotel to pick the girls and I up for some yarn crawling. She was sweet enough to research yarn stores in the area and printed out directions for 4 that sounded quite amazing. Sounds great, right? Care to guess how many stores we visited? Zero. Care to guess why we didn't visit any of the stores? It's really quite simple. Leslie left me to navigate. Yes, we had Google directions. Yes, we had a map. Unfortunately, for me maps are about as handy as tits on a bull. My name is Kerry and I'm map-challenged. And let us not bring up the fact that I have navigation on the CrackBerry but didn't think of it until we were already lost. And by the time I finally did remember I had it? The battery was almost dead. And the charger was in the van. With Bran. 7 miles away. At an address unknown by me. Then there was the potty incident. Me, not one of the girls. Folks, you just can't buy memories like these. So we drove around in circles for some time before poor Leslie had to head home. She dumped my sorry, non-map-reading ass off and squealed the tires as the girls and I watched her speed out of the hotel parking lot. Ok, she didn't really leave us standing in a cloud of dust even though she probably should have. She was a real peach about the entire day and still insisted she had a lovely time even though there was no yarn fondling involved. Me? Best. Day. Ever!!! I got to spend time with an incredible lady who means a great deal to me. Hopefully she'll answer the phone next time we're in town.

Friday morning was spent packing up all of our crap and finding ways to kill time while waiting for Bran to get done class. With the help of Lola, I found Knit Purl. Very nice little shop with a great selection of yarns and needles. I may or may not have bought this:

40" 2.5mm Turbo for the new socks I intended to begin on the way home and some Regia 01805.

When Bran was finished class I patiently tagged along with he and the girls as they insisted they had to eat and shop before we started our trek home. You see, I was promised a stopover at Webs!!! We got there with just a little over a half hour of shopping time before they closed the store. OMG!!! If you've never been before you really should. It's as impressive as everyone says it is. Totally overwhelming too. And I wish I had actually taken time to make a list of yarns I wanted for specific projects I had in mind. I've heard that's a must and it truly is. I wish we had more time to browse because there were tons of yarns and needles I wanted to look at. And buy. I made it out with this little haul:

Starting at the top left and working around clockwise we have Galway 604, Cascade 220 Superwash 1919, Madelinetosh Prairie Baltic, Regia 1802, and a new Buddy Case in eggplant because Dexter ate my other one. Damn that dog and his teeth!

French Press Felted Slippers. I knit these in Lamb's Pride Worsted and found the great buttons at WalMart! I gifted them to a family friend who is ALWAYS there no matter what. And when I say no matter what, I truly mean no matter WHAT. They were awesome and I knit them up on evening watching Letterman. Yes, they really knit that quickly. So much fun! I really need a pair of these for me for this coming winter. Or maybe for today as it's cold and snowing. What's the weather like in your neck of the woods?

Again, knit by me. I totally loved this one too! I knit it with 2 balls of Jojoland Melody. I gifted it to our wonderful across the street neighbor. She's been such a huge help throughout the school year. She works at our public school and just happens to be the secretary in charge of all the homeschooling paperwork. I fill it out each quarter and run it across the road and she takes it to work with her. Such a time saver! She also gathered Darcie's work each day when she was out with the flu for a week and brought it home to me. So. Sweet. She seemed to really like it and I hope she gets lots of use out of it.

Now, I'll bet you're all wondering about the title of today's post. Something funny happened today while Dailaesse was doing her school work. We were sitting next to each other at the dining room table when she all of a sudden jumped off her chair and squatted in the corner. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what she was doing. Even though I should know better, I asked anyway. She said...I'm farting. Ok. Why are you squatting in the corner farting? (I know, you'd think I would learn.) She said...I have to poop and I thought if I let out some little farts I would be able to hold it longer. This kid is always thinking. Always. Needless to say, I sent her upstairs to the bathroom. I guess I should just be glad she loves phonics so much that she'd rather not leave it to go to the bathroom.

The weather was gorgeous and we had an amazing day hiking the trails, getting our feet wet, playing at the little park, and riding our trusty steeds (sticks we found while hiking through the cedar peppered woods). We enjoyed a grand feast at Taco Bell at the end of the day at the food court in the mall. And the little ones enjoyed a nap during the hour drive home. Amazing indeed.

Monkey(ing) Around

Not the greatest photo in the world, sorry. Trust me when I tell you they are awesome though! This is my first pair of Monkey Socks and they won't be my last. The pattern was so easy to memorize and I love the way the yarn worked out with the pattern. Speaking of yarn, I have no idea who gave this to me but I do remember that it was hand-dyed by a swap pal. It wasn't the greatest to work with as it was splitty but the colors??? OMG!!! And it knit in to the nicest, cushiest fabric. I love them!!! Now I'm off to finish some Jaywalking...

That's My Boy

On Monday, March 22, 2010 my son was among a group of 12 to be inducted into the National Technical Honor Society. This is quite an honor on its own, but was made even more special as they are the first ever group of kids from our school to be inducted. Dan has maintained an average of no lower than 97 and hasn't missed one day of school for the past two years in his Building Trades class. It's amazing to see how easily he achieves greatness in the things he's truly interested in.

Way to go Dan! We're so very proud of you for working so hard! (Oh, and he even wore a tie! Without us asking or suggesting that he wear it. My little man is growing up. Sigh.)

Winning Feels Warm

Back a bit before Christmas Mary-Catharine had a contest on her blog. It was quite simple. Leave a comment and be entered for a chance to win some gorgeous yarn hand dyed by a friend of hers. Believe it or not, the random number generator chose me!

When the yarn arrived at the beginning of last week I was so excited that I immediately tore the package open. It was even more awesome in person than it had been on the blog. Since I had been looking at patterns since the day I found out I won, I knew I was going to cast on for a scarf. I couldn't wait. I wound that sucker up as soon as the kids were to bed and started knitting. I didn't like it but thought maybe it would look better if I knit a little more. Nope. It looked like a clown barfed all over it. Yuck. So I ripped it out and began to pout. Then my husband suggested I change my gauge. (It's so sexy when he talks knitting.) And I immediately thought about my favorite mitten pattern knit on size 4 needles. So I cast on for those.

Are these not the most gorgeous mittens you've ever seen in your life??? I am head over heels in love with them! They are colorful and cheerful and will totally brighten even the gloomiest winter day. And they are all mine. Thanks so much again Mary-Catharine!!!

First up, we've had some birthdays around here since I posted last. I think. I'm feeling way too guilty about my lack of blog activity to go look to see when my last post was.

My sweet little baby boy turned 18 back in July. Can you believe it? I can't. He's not playing football this year. I'm crushed but we've all moved on and I'm doing my best to get over it.

Darcie is 14 today. I can't believe that either. When are these kids going to stop making me so old??? Happy birthday sweetheart!!! I hope you have a most amazing year!!!

I suppose you would probably like to see some knitting. There has been lots of it. I know, I'm surprised too.

A new winter hat and mittens for Dailaesse. She loves them. I know the mittens look incredibly long but she loves them. And I love them because I won't have to stop every 2 minutes to tuck them back under her sleeves. That right there is what you call a win-win folks!

I don't remember if I told you all that I had joined Sock Wars IV or not. If not, now I have. I have finished 2 complete pair of socks for the War so far. My first pair are Barcelona by Helen Waittes who is Supreme Commander of Sock Wars IV.

I knit these in Premier Yarns Serenity Sock in the Indigo shade and I must say that for an inexpensive yarn this stuff was awesome to knit with! So awesome that I think I'd like a pair of these for myself.

My second pair is the Air Raid Socks pattern by Emily B. Miller of Skyline Chilly. I knit these in JL Vinca and my experience with this yarn wasn't even close to the one I had with the Premier Yarns. Even though the colors are awesome and the finished fabric was nice, the yarn was terribly splitty and I don't think you could pay me enough to knit with it again.

They are pretty though.

I've also signed up to participate in 52 Pair Plunge III and since my Air Raid Socks were completed this month they count as my first pair for the Plunge! Woo Hoo!!! I'm so glad I wasn't killed off in the War before I was able to complete that pair of socks!

A Not So Famous Famous Hat

I told you I had been busy knitting. I designed this hat based on a commercial pattern I saw kicking around on some pretty cool heads. This one is knit in worsted weight and is quite cool, in my opinion. The pattern can be purchased over there in the right hand side bar or you can get a smokin' hot kit from Sue. I did this as a mystery knit with a group on Ravelry. Check it out. There are some amazing color combos and awesome knitting to see!

A Month and More

Wow. It's been over a month since I posted last. Lots has happened. Most of it good.

We got a new fridge. She gives us water and ice through her door and doesn't complain. She allows us to open her freezer door without barfing ice cubes all over the kitchen floor. She keeps things in her compartments at the temperature she promises. She's shiny. I love her.

I turned 37 on the 16th of this month.

Dan made captain of the track team.

Darcie got a 102 average in math.

Dailaesse is having a blast homeschooling.

I bought the Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day book. If you don't have this book you should buy it right now. Amazing. And it honestly only takes a few minutes to make a loaf. Just look at my first loaf:

I've also done lots of knitting. I was on a serious dishcloth kick for a few days.

I also finished a pair of Blueberry Waffle socks. These were knit in STR Heavyweight Rocktober. So soft and squishy. I gifted them to my Aunt Noreen. She loves them as much as I did. I finished the Noro Kureyon socks I had started for my dad. My mom told me today she's washed them several times now and he still can't wear them. They make his feet itch something terrible. I'm so bummed. I didn't really enjoy knitting with the yarn but they are really nice looking socks. Maybe a couple more washings? Anyone have any thoughts?

I was really glad I didn't know more than several people there that day.

Circus Socks for Dudette

Too cute, huh?

I cast on 48 stitches on a 40" 2.25mm needle (KnitPicks Harmony, thanks for prompting me to try these Leslie they are pretty nice) and knit in 2x2 rib for 24 rows before switching to stockinette for 12 rows. I then worked a pretty basic heel flap then knit the foot until it measured 5.75" long. I can't believe my 6 year old has 7" feet! She's only 2" away from catching up with me!

Up next...details on that no hole short row heel. It really does rock!

This arrived in the mail for me yesterday. It's a second package from my SP13 pal. It includes some great gingerbread tubby goodies as well as some Breathe lotion and cream. Things have been very stressful here lately and boy do I ever need to Breathe. :-) Also included were some gorgeous stitch markers handcrafted by my pal and her hubby, a magnet from her recent trip to Cabo, Interlacements Tiny Toes, and Heavyweight Socks that Rock in Rocktober. Yum! Not pictured but also included are 3 great books...Baby Beanies, Scrumptious Toppers for Tots & Toddlers, AND Drunk, Divorced, and Covered in Cat Hair. OMG!!! I stayed up until 1 this morning reading this book by Crazy Aunt Purl. I assumed with a title like this there would be laughs-a-plenty. And there was. There were also some tears which I totally didn't see coming. Awesome, awesome book. If you've not read it you really should. Last but certainly not least...there were socks!!!

When I opened the socks knit just for me out of Socks That Rock I cried like a little girl. Nobody has ever knit me socks before.

I put them on immediately. They fit perfectly and are so warm and squishy. I've fallen head over heels in love with my pal. Thank you again pal, from the very bottom of my heart...and soles!!!

I finished the sweater for Dudette last week. It took all weekend for the fool thing to dry because our room is so cold. And then I once again had to wait for my model to be in a modeling kind of mood. Sheesh.

She loves the sweater and can't wait to wear it. She asked if she might be able to wear it for gym day. I suggested she wait until the weekend. We'll see who wins the war.

Oh, I've been meaning to share a funny little tidbit of info...I started this sweater 2 years ago on the needle recommended and was getting gauge. When I picked it back up I was WAY off. I went down a needle size and was still off but not by enough to warrant going down another. It's amazing to me how much I've relaxed in my knitting. What a difference a couple years can make. :-)

Freebie For Your Feet

Something Fishy

Well, it was supposed to be for my friend's grandson but Dailaesse batted her sweet little eyes and asked if she could pretty please try it on just to see if it fit.

I know kids are all head but there's no way this would fit a little guy who's not quite a year old yet.

I thought changing the original pattern (worsted weight on size US 7 needles) to that of my own (dk weight on US 5 needles) would work out perfectly. Not.

So now it's back to the drawing board. Guess I'll just have to decrease the number of stitches cast on and fiddle with the rest of the numbers to get a smaller size.

It's all good though because I'm totally looking forward to knitting more of these.

Dead or Alive

Since I'm waiting for the yarn for the sweater to arrive before I can finish it I thought it only fair for me to be able to cast on a new project. This is the Fish Hat (Dead or Alive) from Knitty and it's so cute! I'm knitting this one in some old Patons Astra that was WAY back in the yarn closet. I don't really care for knitting with it but I wanted something that would be machine wash and dry as it's going to a home that might not want to fiddle with anything but. Plus it's for a toddler and I know it will be outgrown quickly and the original pattern looks large on most of the adult heads I've seen it on. I'm hoping to finish this up soon. Although I cast on a new pair of Fetching today. Now the fish is on the back burner. HA!

Memory Lane

Remember this?

Of course you don't. Know why? Because I started it 2 years ago, worked on it for 2 days, then stuck it in the bin of doom. I don't know why I put it there. It certainly didn't deserve to be tucked away. It's a fine sweater.

For some reason I've been in a finishing sort of mood lately. So I pulled it out the other night and sat down to finish it.

See that? I'm 5 rows from the end of the sleeve and I have about 1.5 feet of yarn left. Thankfully I found a nice lady on Ravelry who had a hank of the same yarn I need in her destash list. We worked out a trade and the yarn is on its way to me today. I can't wait to get this finished and Dudette can't wait to wear it!

The Pits

Ok, so way back on the 2nd I started writing a post about how I had the red sweater all the way to the pits but found a stupid mistake which required ripping all the way back to the ribbing. After that, I had a hard time getting back into the damn thing. Then all the holiday stuff started creaping in and things really stalled. Last Friday was a Christmas party for Bran's work and then Saturday I was volunteered to go shopping after my mother invited the girls to go with her. I would have loved it had I not had a ton of knitting sitting at home for me. Ugh.

Not sure what was up with the grumpy puss. She was actually quite happy.

I'm quite please with how this turned out. I've been really working on my finishing and I feel like it gets better each time I attempt it. The little blue sweater is also done but you'll have to wait until tomorrow for that.

Toasty Tootsies

I finished up the second sock of the nice warm pair I was knitting for Daddy. I wasn't at all sure he'd like the heavier weight of the worsted yarn so I took the first one over when I finished it. It was an instant hit. So I of course wanted to quickly finish the second. But the little snowflake sweaters presented themselves. So I worked on Daddy's second sock for a couple minutes here and there just to take the edge off.

I closed the toe last night and brought them over today. He's thrilled and so am I. I've been under an enormous amount of stress lately and it felt so good to have something finished. Closure. It does a body good.

Unfortunately, artificial. I have pretty bad allergies so real trees are tough. I used to be able to tolerate them for a week or so but since we've added the cat and the lab to the family they are totally out of the question.

Always after Thanksgiving. Sometimes not until a week before Christmas.

The day after Christmas. We have a small house.

It's Limp and It Makes Me Loose

I told you I'd review the new Kollage square circulars today and that about sums it up in a nutshell.

I've never used a needle with a more flexible cable. Normally flexible is good when you're working Magic Loop but in this case, not so much. The cables are flopping around all loosey-goosey and twisting around to beat the band as they hang on the sides in anything but a loop form. To be fair, I ordered the 40" US 1 (2.25mm) and 40" US 2 (2.5mm) and I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume (damn I hate to do that) that the cable thickness will grow with the needle size thereby adding some stiffness to the cable as the needle size increases. These smaller size needles in combination with the limp cable just aren't cutting it for me when trying to knit socks ala ML. I will confess that the more I use them the quicker I'm knitting but I think the speed comes with anything you do over and over. It doesn't make me like them any better. The join is also not smooth at all. At least not on the 2 needles I have. Couple that with the limp cable and well, it's just not good. I'm pulling up loops through the center of the line of stitches to be knit.

It's not all bad though. The one thing I really love about these needles is their shape. As you know, I normally have a problem with being tight. These have drastically changed that. I was quite surprised by this since when I ordered there was a blurb about ordering up a size as most knitters found they had to do this to make gauge with the needles. Not me. I was shocked.

So, would I buy more of these needles? Definitely not for Magic Loop. I might try a couple of the 24" lengths for sweaters though. I really do love that it's hip to knit square.

Almost forgot...Leslie asked if I hadn't tried the Harmony wooden needles. I haven't. I can only assume (there I go again) that since you asked they must have a nice cable and a smooth join. Do tell sweetie. :-)

Oh, Oh, Oh It's Magic

I had really hoped to have this second snowflake sweater to the armholes by last night but as you can clearly see, I didn't make it. In my defense, I have managed to get 2,697,318 loads of laundry done. I've done several more loads today and am now about ready to go pick the sweater back up. With any luck I'll get it to the armholes and compete the back today. Small goals. That's what I need.

Q: Knitterman asked if I would pick up and knit the sleeves downward or if I would knit them cuff-up and then set them in.

A: I would love to be able to pick up and knit downward but the stitches would then be upside down from those in the body of the sweater. Right? I'm thinking that since there are those damn little white stitches here and there that the direction of the knitting would make a difference. If I'm wrong PLEASE tell me now because I would love nothing more than to not have to set the sleeves in.

Q: Leslie says she's surprised to hear me talk about 2 short circs since I was the one who gave her her first 40" needle.

A: Would everyone please hum the tune to "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" as I respond?

Leslie dear, I am still crazy, head over heels in love with Magic Loop. The needles I ordered are a US 3 and 7. One for the ribbing and one for the body of the sleeve. I went with the shorter needles instead of one long circ for ML because I'm knitting with acrylic and I just can't stand the way the acrylic grinds across metal needles like nails across a chalkboard. Since I've not found any wooden circulars with a cable that I feel are flexible enough for ML or with a smooth enough join, I resorted to 8" and 9" circs. Not my first choice by any means but it will beat having to knit them flat and seaming them after.

And speaking of flexible cables and smooth joins, be sure to tune in tomorrow when I review the new Kollage square circs.

a vest?

I decided to try my hand at working this sweater in the round instead of in pieces. I've always been somewhat afraid of this because I've heard so many people say that you can be in big trouble when it comes to splitting for the front and back and you have to start working back and forth rather than in the round. So far, so good. Now I'm so excited about working in the round that I've ordered a couple really short circulars so I can knit the sleeves the same way. If they don't arrive in time do you think I could convince the lady who I'm knitting them for that she'd rather have ski vests instead of the ski sweaters she asked for? I didn't think so either.

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?

I love natural fibers. Acrylic makes my teeth hurt but I've been known to use it for some of my kids knits when I know the item will be going to someone who might not be inclined to hand wash. I think anyone who willingly knits with fun fur or any other overdone novelty yarn should be forced to wear a patchwork poncho knit from them for the rest of their life. Sock yarns tend to be my favorites (Socks That Rock kicks ass!) but I also love wools (the newer superwash wools are awesome) in varying weights with the exception of bulky and worsted weight tends to be the heaviest I normally knit with. I also adore laceweight in solid and heathered shades.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?

I have a binder with all of my older and cheaper circulars. My Addi Turbo needles are in their own separate quilted case as are my straights. My crochet hooks are in a leather zippered case.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?

I've been knitting for close to 20 years now. I taught myself by watching the "Keeping You In Stitches" video I bought at a department store. I'd say I'm probably close to advanced.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?

I have a list at The Loopy Ewe.

5. What's your favorite scent?

Cinnamon.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?

I love Green & Black milk chocolate.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?

I crochet and cross stitch but not nearly as much as I knit. I don't spin yet. I wanted to learn but my desire isn't as strong as I thought as I've not been able to stick with it.

I love country and 80's rock.

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?

My favorite color is blue. I like most other colors with the exception of some browns.

I live with my 3 amazing kids, ages 17, 13, and 5. My wonderful hubby and I will celebrate our 8th anniversary on November 25th. We have a Shih Tzu and cat who are both almost 4 and a 15 month old black lab.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?

I would wear mittens if I had them. I don't wear scarves or hats. I'm only 4' 11" so ponchos just look absolutely ridiculous on me but I also think they look absolutely ridiculous on most everybody.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?

Socks.

13. What are you knitting right now?

Socks. Sweaters. Hats. Mittens. Afghans.

Absolutely.

I love circulars. My favorites used to be Addi Turbos but I've really taken a shine to the metal HiYa HiYa needles. When I knit with acrylic I much prefer wood.

Both.

It's so old that I can't remember how old it is.

18. What is your favorite holiday? What winter holiday do you observe?

My favorite holiday is Halloween. We celebrate Christmas.

I started this little Trellis sweater last week and am really cranking on it. So far I've completed the back (which was almost finished in the photo above) as well as the left front. I'm now more than half finished with the right front and I can't wait to get it finished up and gifted to it's new owner.

From the Dalegarn book #148. This is pattern nr. 12 and is worked with 3 colors of sport yarn. The pattern calls for Falk but I improvised. Next up, some matching mittens most likely missing the cute little pattern since all those floats and little hands won't mix. Damn, could I get any more m words in that run-on sentence?

Holiday Cash

I really hate begging on the blog but here I am doing it. Duder goes to St. Bernard's School. It's a small Catholic school (all religions are welcome, however) with small classes and amazing teachers. The largest class this year has 15 children and Duder's kindergarten class has just 10 students with a teacher and assistant for the class. They do tons of stuff with the kids and are patient and loving beyond belief. Because they are a private school they depend on donations to fund a huge part of the expense of operating the school. So here comes the begging...

Each year the school does a Holiday Calendar Lottery. Tickets are $10 each but every day beginning Thanksgiving Day and ending New Year's Day, a ticket is drawn from the barrel. If your ticket is drawn it gets put back in the barrel for more chances to win. Prizes are typically $50 a day throughout the week (although there are 2 days where they are $20.08 or $28) with weekends being $100 a day (again, 2 days where they are $29 or $30). Thanksgiving is $250 and Christmas and New Year's Day are $500 each. So there's a chance to win up to $3207.08 in prizes.

Since I'm begging you to buy a ticket to help support this amazing school I thought it only fair to give something in return. I will send everyone who purchases a ticket my pattern for the Trinity Sunrise bag over there in the sidebar. But wait, that's not all. I knit this little BSJ last month for Dan's boss. He and his wife had their first grandbaby around the end of September. I used the modification for the Blouson Sleeves and love the outcome. I will totally knit it like this again. I used Fleece Artist Merino Sock and a size 4 Addi Turbo. Next time I'll use a contrasting color for the cuffs and maybe an i-cord border. Too much fun!

From Miss Bea's Colours by Louisa Harding knit in Jaeger Matchmaker Merino DK color #656.

I love this sweater. I hated knitting this sweater. The chart was a real pain in the ass to work from since it had all 3 or 4 sizes in one spot with different colored lines to represent each size. Couple that with the fact that the sleeve charting was placed in the center of the back and front charts and well...it was a pain in the ass. Definitely not a pattern for knitting in the car. But I love the way it turned out. It's a really nice pattern. Wish I had the patience to knit it again.

What a Phony

This is my first attempt at a Fake Isle. I love the pattern and had a great time knitting it. It won't be my last but I will make some modifications on my next one. I already shortened this one but I suspect it's still going to be too long. I'll also change the rib from 3x1 to 2x2 on the next one. I'm hoping to deliver it to my Aunt Noreen this week. If it's too long I think I might turn the rib and stitch it to the inside of the hat. Keep your fingers crossed.

Where in the world has the last month gone??? I always think for some reason that summer is going to be less busy and chaotic than the school year. Right.

So, we bought a new van...

She is a 2008 Town & Country Limited and has 2 DVD/TV screens, navigation, hands free phone, backup alarm and camera, swivel seats, a table, and I'm head over heels in love with her. I can see us keeping her until her wheels fall off.

I got a new phone...

The Blackberry Curve in silver. I started with the Blackberry Pearl in pink but found it too hard for my poor text-challenged fingers to work. I can't begin to tell you how much I love my phone. It's awesome. The clarity is amazing and the capabilities are to dye for.

Bet you're thinking I've not done any knitting though huh? Well I have. Just look...

This is a little hat I knit for Darcie. It's knit in Catalina Chunky Baby Alpaca and takes less than 2 skeins. You hold the yarn doubled and knit on a size 11. Can you say 1 nite knit?

These are the Thuja socks I started for Daddy a really long time ago. They're finally finished and on his feet. He loves them. I knit these from Mountain Colors Bearfoot that I purchased from a fellow Ravelry user.And this is Girly from Wee Knits 3. What a fun knit this was! I never would have chosen these colors on my own but they work so well together. It's such a sweet sweater. I knit the 6 month size in the Mission Falls 1824 Cotton as called for in the pattern. Love it! I think I just might hang on to this one and donate it to the auction for St. Bernard's this year since the bag was such a hit.

Those are just the few projects I've actually finished since last time. There's lots more that's been cast on and I'll be sharing them soon.

GAUGE PROBLEM!

Ok, well not really. I did this on purpose. It's the MinnowKnits Dutch Girl pattern and it's awesome. But it only goes up to a 4 year size. Dudette is 5 and I wanted her to be able to wear it for a bit. So I threw caution to the wind and knit this bad boy up on size 11 needles when the pattern called for 10 1/2. As you can see, it's quite large. But Dudette loves it and as she pointed out, she'll get a good couple years out of it. God bless the thought process of my baby.

I used some Bulky Lamb's Pride I had in my stash for this one and completed it with a gorgeous button Sue gifted me. That she made all by herself. I couldn't make this sweater any more special now if I tried.

There she is, striking a pose in her new tank top I just finished. She's quite taken with it and wants to wear it every day until it doesn't fit her anymore. That's true love, wouldn't you say?

The design is my own and I don't think I could repeat it if I tried. I started this last summer and just never got around to finishing it until now. It's ok though, it would have been way too big last summer.

Cables, Cables Everywhere!

That is the completed back of the Cable and Rib Sweater with Hood by Debbie Bliss. The pattern is in The Baby Knits Book and it's insanely gorgeous. I started this on the 10th in the largest size given (4 years) and my knitting time has been EXTREMELY limited with the end of the school year here so you can see how quickly it actually knits up. If you've not knit one yet you really should. I can't wait to choose a yarn so I can knit one for Duder. I'm thinking a pretty pink CTH DK is in order.

Just Ribbing You

This is Yankee Knitter #16 (English Rib) in size 8. After having Duder try this one on (I didn't get to have her try on the other cabled sweater in red which was also a size 8 because she was sick and the lady they were knit for picked them up on Saturday while she was still under the weather.) and knowing that this pattern has a lot more give than the cabled sweater, I think I'll be totally safe knitting her the size 8 cardigan. I still can't believe I didn't get to take a photo of the finished red sweater. With Duder being sick my mind was other places. Oh well, like Bran said, it's the same as the yellow one. :-)

One more in this pattern to go. This is the size 4 which is a little small for Duder as you can see. I'm anxious to get the 8 finished up and tried on to see how that one fits. I was thinking of doing an 8 in the cardigan for her for school in the fall but now I'm thinking maybe a 6 is in order instead.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has knit this as the neckline seems to sit quite low to me. It looks ok when on I guess but...I don't know there's just something that doesn't feel right. Feedback???

Seeing Double

This is Yankee Knitter #22 and it's quite loverly. The pattern gives options for the pullover and a cardigan. I think I'll do the cardigan for Duder for kindergarten. All the knitting is done for both sweaters now with the exception of the neckbands. I just took a break from seaming the yellow one to write this post. I hate seaming. Although I have to say that the more I do and the better I get the less it bothers me.
