Am I blue? Yes, I'm blue.

BlueSteps. Love. It. It reminds me of our pool nestled under the trees in the backyard. Can you tell I'm ready for summer? Like always, you can email Sue or call her at 518-523-9230 if you want some of your very own.

I've decided to extend the drawing until the end of the weekend too so if you want a chance to win a hank of Sol Joy just drop me a note in the comments and tell me what you think the ideal yardage is for a sport weight sock yarn.

What a gorgeous blue!

I always thought Sweet Georgia's Speed Demon was a perfect amount -- 185 yds / 50g.

I think 350 yds should be enough for a pair of socks in DK. With sock weight yarn there's over 400 yds (the ones I use) and I have always left overs. I knit mostly for size 10 feet and mid calf. I don't like anklets. So, yeah, to be on the save side, I think 350 yds would be good.

I think 350 yards would be perfect. By the way I love the new color "Blue Steps" I just emailed Sue about it. I receved my cold blue Lagoon yesterday in the mail. Love the tight twist on the yarn. It should knit up very nicely.

I think that it should be about 420 or so - I have a big foot and sometimes 350 just isn't enough

I think between 350-375 yds would be good. There is a lot of variation in foot sizes and preferred cuff lengths, and I guess I would much rather have yarn left than worry that I will run out. I wish I knew how many yards I would need for knee socks!

For sport weight socks - 350 yards - but then I'm knitting for BIG size 12 feet.

I'm new to this, but think I'd feel more secure with 350 yds. I knit toe up and like to be able to make tall socks! The BlueSteps looks lovely; I inherited my mother's love of blue.

I like an even 400. This will accomodate pretty much anyone's size foot but a pro basketball player. If you have leftovers, do what I do and make a new cap for my grandson to lose. ;-)

Hi, Kerry I am a fat old broad and I find I need 125gr of yarn regardless of grist. I loved it when the 6ply sock yarns came out in 150gr skeins - I was happy buying 3@50gr, not very happy having to buy 2@100gr. I have large feet and my legs and ankles swell up a lot by the end of the day. I can almost squeeze a pair of socks with 5" cuffs from 100gr of 4ply fingering wt yarn, but to finish the toes, I need to take an inch off the top. :)

Kerry,

I have to say that I've never thought of any particular yardage as ideal for sock yarn. The thickness of the fiber and the elasticity of it mean that I can knit very different sock lengths with skeins that say they have the same yardage per weight. Also, some of the patterns I have used absolutely EAT UP the yarn - like Cookie A's Titanias\'s Revenge pattern for Blue Moon Fiber Arts last year... I've never run out of STR yarn before using that pattern.

But, if I have to choose, I'd say that I like 100g skeins to have 440 yards. There - you nailed me down. Now I feel like knitting extra long socks just to prove that that isn't always enough yardage. Arrgh!

By the way, the now Sol Joy color is my favorite.(lkobeck@yahoo.com)

The color just grabbed me and said "Buy me!"
How could I resist?? As far as yardage, I think the important thing is for people with average or slightly over size feet should be able to get sufficient yardage from one skein.

Hi Kerry, you are so right about these colours - just beautiful.

For sports weight, I think "on average" that 350 yards should make a pair of socks - I would be more comfortable with 375 yards, though!

This is an interesting contest and the comments are appreciated - thanks, Joan from Canada

For sock weight yarn, I like 400 yards. I tend to knit socks toe-up if I am knitting with a new yarn so I can see how much mileage I can get from a new sock yarn. I really don't purchase sock yarn based upon length, I usually purchase it based upon weight. I like my 100g balls of any weight. From Bulky down to sock weight, I have found that 100g is usually plenty of yarn for any of the projects that I am working on. I think that the yardage is actually a "guesstimate" most of the time, especially with the big sock companies. If someone is hand spinning their yarn, I will take their estimate at length much more seriously since most hand spinners will skein their yarn on a niddy-noddy and most know the length of one revolution.

I love the yarn!

The first pair of socks I made was with sport weight sock yarn (Opal Gems-100g/ 225 yds) and I had no problem getting both socks out of it. But it was a lacy pattern and my feet are only a US 8 1/2. Maybe 300-325 yards? Fingering weight usually comes in 350- 440 yards and you would need less sport weight.

I have also found that 100 grams (or some come in 4oz), regardless of the weight of the yarn is enough to make a pair of socks for my pretty average feet. Usually with enough left over to make a pair of baby socks!

I don't like a lot of leftovers, so I'm going to sound contrary by saying that I like sport weight in the realm of 300-325 yards or so, given that I plan to make a plain stocking stitch sock. (I wear a woman's 8 1/2.) If that cuts it close, I already have enough leftovers to play around from stash for toes, cuffs, or heels, or even add stripes on the foot as a surprise.

Sol Joy looks just like it sounds. :-)

I would say a minimum of 185 per sock, but I have a longer foot, and like a tall top. The average foot size (that used to be 7 1/2 just 20 years ago) is now 8 1/2, and since it is nice to knit for men and stash may be kept for a few years (decades-smile) then it would be nice to have an even 400 yds.

I would like as much as I can get. It seems if I knit for myself then the granddaughters want some just like mine. So I would say 400 yd.
I love all the new colors--blue steps looks wonderful.

I would go 400 yds would be nice. No worries when knitting for the hubby.

I would say 400 yds. Every one of the colors are gorgeous and so rich looking. I bet they feel wonderful.

I think somewhere between 350 and 400 yards is perfect. I guess that allows for larger feet as well as smaller ones too.

Hi, love the yarn! I'd actually go with the high side of yardage. I like having leftovers and mid-calf socks so I like 450 yds.

I think 400 yards is about right. 350 yds is enough for me but I need more if I want to make socks for my husband or my daughter who both have slightly larger feet than I.

Unknown said...

350 is usually enough for my foot. When I'm knitting for my husband, I need more, because his feet are abnormally large. For him, I need at least 400 yards.

So, I'd say 400 yards is a good length for socks.
