Knew Knittin'

I have a ton of things on my must knit list.

This isn't one of them. It is pretty though. Isn't it? It's a little top down sweater for the baby (btw Clara, the baby is now 4 but since she's the youngest she's probably going to be stuck with the title for some time LOL) that I'm working in CTH Potluck Worsted in the Jewels colorway. I cast on Monday evening and this is where I was last night before bed.

This is on the must knit list but isn't going as quickly as the sweater.

It's a Sol Joy sock in the Cold Lagoon colorway. While I'm still absolutely enthralled with this yarn I must admit I don't care for working it on a size 1. I don't think it should be worked on anything smaller than a 2. Maybe even a 3. Ever. Seriously. But since this is an experiment in yardage needed I'm doing it. At least I have an absoutely wonderful yarn to work with.

Speaking of yardage needed, what do you all think is a good yardage amount for a sport weight sock yarn? 310? 350? 400? Leave a note in the comments between now and Friday and tell me what you think the ideal yardage would be and I'll enter you in a drawing for some fabu Sol Joy.

I have two older sisters, and until the day she died - when I was 32 years old - my mother still referred to me as "the baby"!

I love the sweater colors!

oooh Cold Lagoon is pretty!

For sport weight and my size 11 feet I can make decent sized socks with 260-300 yards, but I will only knit them toe-up (just in case). With 350+ I will knit top down if I feel inclined because I know I have enough.

I tend to go for weight over yardage for fingering and sport weight yarns. I prefer at least 4 oz of yarn if I'm making socks from sport or DK weight yarn. To be safe, I'd like 350-400 yards of sport weight, if I had to go by yardage. My feet aren't big, and just for myself I probably could get away with 300 yards, but I like to have left over to make socks for my niece and other baby presents.

I'm not a fan of toe-up and I like to have a bit of leftover for future darning, a small project, or to combine with other leftovers for a wrap or sweater, so I think at least 340-350 yards would make me happy.

For me I like to have a little left over so I can knit a pair of socks for my one of my girls. I'd say 350-400 yards is probably a good range for me.

My preference is for at least 350 yards, and 400 yards is the best. If the yardage is around 350, I do the socks toe-up for certain. (If the yarn is expensive, I also do toe-up to use every last inch!)

I do socks top down so I would go for the 350 if I didn't want much left over.

i would prefer to have a little too much yarn than just enough...so for
sports-wt, i would like 350-370 yds.
i knit cuff down and nothing makes me more nervous than to get near the toe of the 2nd sock with a very small ball of yarn. this also allows one to knit cables and ripply type socks; both of which eat up yarn!

I won't even bother with a yarn that doesn't have at least 350 yards. I have large-ish feet and I only knit top down and it drives me crazy worrying if I'll run out of yarn. I'd prefer yarn to come in 350 - 400 yard hanks. For sportweight, 375 would certainly be enough.

For me the more yardage on a skein the better. That way I have plenty of yarn for the socks no matter what pattern I choose and I have some leftovers to use for accents on other socks or odd ball socks. So I vote for 400 yards.

I'd say at least 350 if not more~~I'm usually ok with that but if I'm making a pair for my friend I'd want more to be safe!
Awesome colors you're using for the baby sweater and socks!

I think 310 is sufficient, but if you want to go on the safe side, 350 is more than enough.
I love the colors in the sweater! And the sock. I am finishing up a pair of socks on size 1s out of medium weight STR, and they are taking forever too! Lesson learned- use size 2s next time.

My vote is 350-400. Large feet might take up to 400 (my husband has size 13's). My size, med. ladies takes less than 300 because I like shorter leg tops and plain vanilla patterns. Any cabling would need lots more.

If it's a put-up for socks, I'd think 400 is a really generous amount. If I were knitting them for myself, 350 would probably do it. That sock yarn is YUMMY. Have to go google it.

My socks always weigh a little less than 100 grams, so that's what I look for, not even taking the yardage into consideration. I've been knitting socks for years and that's always worked for me.

That Sol Joy colorway is gorgeous!

In sport weight, I can usually knit get by with 300 yards, though for my husband about 370 makes a pair. For the ideal amount, I'd vote for 400 yards.

Having only ever knit 1 1/2 pairs of socks in my life (I'm on the second 1/2 of the second pair now) I have absolutely no idea about yardage/weight. This will have to come though as I have two or three lots of sock yarn here, so will knitting more in the very near future. I think though that I would go with more is better to be on the safe side. I'd rather have too much than not enough.

I would say 350 yds should make a decent size pair of women's socks. Love your blog. I do enjoy reading it.

I think 310 is enough. But I don't like my socks very long- I'm short!

I can knit a pair with a little more than 365 yds. How about 400, then we could knit a pair and a spare!

Don't enter me twice, but I just wanted to add thanks for hosting the generous contest.

350 would probably be enough. I start to panic when I see the skein start to get too small.

350-400 would work well for me - I prefer top down and don't want to worry about running out!

Chelle said...

400 - because I'm still figuring this whole sock knitting thing out, and I always want to make sure there's enough.

I prefer the sock yarn in two hanks for one pair of socks (200 yd. each) so I don't have to divide it which I never come up equal with from one big hank. Love your colors. My baby is now 25 years old and she is still my baby.

I think 375 yds would be plenty for any sock even the bigger sizes. Actually in sport weight 350 should be plenty. Beautiful new color in the Sol Joy.

I have big feet, and I often knit for people with big feet, so I prefer to have at least 350 yds. 370-400 is better - I don't mind having a bit left over.

I would say 350 as well.

The Sol Joy colors are gorgeous!

3rd try.
250 would be the absolute minimum. That would be in the anklet sock range. I agree with the other comments for 400 yds. Kids think it is cool to have sock that match moms so the leftovers go to them.

I think 350 should be sufficient but 375 would be nice for that little extra wiggle room.
