Butterflies Flutter By

We brought home some caterpillars from Aunt Noreen's last week in various stages of development. One was still nibbling on some milk weed. One had hung himself from the top of the cup and had built his cocoon by the end of the evening. And the third was already in his cocoon before we brought him home. This is what happened this afternoon...

One of our caterpillars hatched into a beautiful Monarch butterfly! Isn't he gorgeous? We brought him outside and he headed for the tomatoes...

He hung there for a couple hours while his wings dried out. He seemed pretty healthy. I hope he has a safe journey. I can't wait for the other two to hatch!

There is a Mimosa tree next to my house that was just covered in Monarch butterflies. It was so gorgeous! It was as if the entire tree was moving - with all the fluttering wings and color.

Too cool that you got one to hatch!

Very cool! This is their migration season I think. I know that Fire Island (on Long Island) is right in their migration path..we were there earlier in the week and the place was teeming with them. I heard that on some days you can pick them off the trees because they die from exhaustion of their long journey (not sure where they're going LOL)
